So a few highlights from the past few weeks. We all had the opportunity to go horseback riding at the base of a gorgeous volcano a short drive outside of Puebla. It was so much fun, though the one horse was slightly crazy. Nonetheless, it was incredible to go riding through streams, up hills, and even galloping through a field. For me (Taylor), it was a relief to be out of the smelliness and noise of city life for a day.. Being in the woods definitely took me home to Lancaster for a bit.
Rachel and I have also been anxiously anticipating the release of The Hunger Games in theaters. When we found out the one theater here has a showing called the "VIP" showing, we could not resist the temptation. So, one evening after classes, we went! At first, we were apprehensive, not entirely sure it would be worth it. However, upon entering the theater, we settled into huge, comfy, leather recliners. A server promptly came to us to see if we wanted any food and, after reviewing the menu, we bought some cheesecake and sushi. Without a doubt, this was the most incredible theater I had ever been in! We enjoyed the movie, though agreed that a few characters were slightly casted wrong. Overall, it was definitely worth splurging on.
This past week, we went to Mexico City, for Holy Week. We spent the first 3 days touring museums and going sight-seeing. This included seeing the Ballet Folklorico, which was absolutely beautiful. The music and dancing captured the vivaciousness and color of the Mexican heritage and culture. We also endured yet another tremor, this time while on top of one of the highest buildings in the city. Another interesting event was eating lunch at 4 in the afternoon. For those of you who know me, it is extremely dangerous to let a Wenger go that long without eating. Needless to say, I was a bit grumpy by that time.
After those first three days, we met up with a small Mennonite church who we would be remembering Christ´s death and resurrection with. Groups of students were assigned to host families to stay the remainder of the week with. Rach, Laura, and I were lucky enough to be paired together! We stayed with a family of four: a dad, a mom, 5 year old sister, and 2 year old brother. Our little sister was quite talkative, when we first met her, she talked for an hour straight!
We visited the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the castle of Chapultepec, and many other sights. We had a Maundy Thursday service which included foot washing, a Good Friday service, a Saturday baptism, and a Sunday morning Easter service. It was quite a packed few days! We also were able to see a live reenactment of the trial and crucifixion of Christ. It was a very different experience and hard to see the actual blood from the crown of thorns and the bruises from the whipping. The reenactment went on for over four hours, though we did not watch all of it.
Overall, the past week was very very busy but also incredibly fun. This week we mainly only have classes so it´ll be a nice break. The crazy thing is, we have less than two weeks left on our cross cultural experience! This trip has absolutely flown by. I cannot believe we are so close to the end. Time to start processing all the events!
Thanks for the continued prayers! See you all in a couple weeks =)
Taylor, Rachel, and Laura
